New media

Definition:

In a limited sense, "new media" means the information and communication technologies that emerged in the late 20th century — digital and computerized — that are capable of reaching out to all parts of the globe at once by setting up an instantneous audio-visual network. However, in a more comprehensive sense, "new media" today would utilize all available modes of communication, new as well old (print, radio and television), as required (depending on the subject matter), to achieve the best effect and maximum reach.

What I like about your definition is that is considers the much wider reach of "new" media over old, as well as the integration of multiple modes of communication. One further aspect that I would consider essential is new media's capacity to be interactive. Rather than being passive recipients, users of new media often have the ability to talk back or in other ways manipulate the communications they encounter.

I would agree with Jenny's comments on this. I would also question what you think about interactivity? I do agree that new media would incorporate all aspects of, what we might consider old media. It is great that you included that. How long do you think that we will consider it to be new?

I also want to say that I don't know that I agree that with your statement, "'new media' means the information and communication technologies that emerged in the late 20th century — digital and computerized," but I will say that there seems to be and unsaid assumption that this is what new media is. I fall into this category as well. Without thinking about it I have assumed the same thing. I think that once we start to question some of the different aspect of new media and how other people define it, becomes a little more convoluted than just that simple definition.

I like the fact that you mentioned the global aspect of new media. With new media, we are more connected with the rest of the world.
I also think interactivity has a major role in defining new media. Just as with our blogs, we read posts, and then have the ability to comment on them.

Juls,

I think the "newness" of media is a subjective thing. You may consider blogging, which is only some years old compared to a decades-old thing like print, to be either old or new, depending on how you see it. Today's technology becaomes old tomorrow, like "yesterday's hits; today's oldies." But to my mind, what is more important is the usage of media and the different modes of communication, whether old or new. An innovatve person can use even old media in a new way.
